A guardian ad litem (GAL) is an attorney who is appointed by a court to represent the interests of a party who may not be able to advocate for themselves such as a minor in a divorce, paternity or post- judgment case or an alleged incompetent person in a guardianship or protective placement or services proceeding. A guardian ad litem bills for the time spent working on a case based on the hourly rate determined by the court.
